German Skies

I learned of the idea or concept of German Skies from my friend Juan – who is European. He explained that the expression refers to the apparent lack of color and features in the German skyline.

That concept was the point of departure for this project. Being at a crossroads with photography and suffering from a severe case of burnout, I shot and edited entirely on my iPhone using the Instagram app.

The iPhone became my constant and the only creative outlet I could use without feeling encumbered. I gave myself three simple rules: shoot only on overcast days, convert to black and white and always try to keep the horizon on the lower third of the frame.

Halfway through the process I decided it was time to pick up a camera and shoot in conjunction with the iPhone. This work is the end result of my adventures.
